ASTM A490 Heavy Hex Structural Bolts | Alloy Steel, Quenched & Tempered

Product Introduction
Heavy hex structural bolts manufactured to ASTM A490 (inch-series), now consolidated into ASTM F3125 as Grade A490. Quenched and tempered alloy steel for structural steel connections. Two types: Type 1 (medium carbon alloy steel) and Type 3 (weathering steel). Diameters 1/2" to 1-1/2" inclusive. Tensile strength 150–173 ksi, minimum yield strength 130 ksi.

Material & Mechanical Properties
Tensile strength 150–173 ksi, yield strength 130 ksi minimum, elongation 14% minimum in 4D, reduction of area 40% minimum. Proof load 120 ksi minimum. Hardness: 33–39 HRC for diameters ≤ 1" with length less than 2D; 33–38 HRC for longer bolts. Heat treatment: full-length quench and temper. Type 1: medium carbon alloy steel (chromium-molybdenum, similar to AISI 4140/4142). Type 3: weathering steel (comparable to COR-TEN A/B). Type 2 withdrawn in 2002.

Geometry & Thread
Dimensional conformity to ASME B18.2.6 for heavy hex structural bolts. Inch-series diameters 1/2" to 1-1/2". Fully threaded bolts supplied under the F3125 supplemental provision are marked "S".

Surface Finish
Finish options are limited due to the bolt's high strength and tempering temperature. Hot-dip galvanizing, mechanical deposition, and electroplating are not permitted on A490; the molten zinc bath temperature exceeds the tempering temperature and causes annealing. Permitted finishes: plain (uncoated), black oxide for mild corrosion resistance, or zinc/Dacromet/Geomet coatings per ASTM F1136 for Type 1. Type 3 weathering steel is typically supplied bare to develop a protective oxide patina.

Assembly & Certification
Complete assembly comprises:

  • Bolt: ASTM A490 heavy hex

  • Nut: ASTM A563 Grade DH heavy hex

  • Washer: ASTM F436 hardened, required under both head and nut when installed in material with yield point less than 40 ksi. For bolts over 1" diameter in oversized or slotted holes, an additional hardened washer of minimum 5/16" thickness is required.

Bolt head permanently marked with grade symbol "A490", manufacturer's identification mark, and type designation. Type 3 bolts carry an underlined "A490" marking. Batch traceability via Material Test Reports and EN 10204 Type 3.1 inspection certificates.

Application Suitability
Steel building frames, bridges, industrial plants, offshore platforms, and heavy infrastructure projects designed per the Specification for Structural Joints Using High-Strength Bolts (Research Council on Structural Connections). Specified where higher strength than A325 is required. Type 3 weathering steel is used for unpainted atmospheric exposure where the protective patina develops over time.
