ASTM A325 Heavy Hex Structural Bolt – Quenched and tempered heavy hex structural bolt per ASTM A325, now consolidated under ASTM F3125 Grade A325. Diameters 1/2″–1-1/2″. Types: Type 1 (medium carbon, carbon boron, or medium carbon alloy steel) and Type 3 (weathering steel for atmospheric corrosion resistance). Under original A325: minimum tensile 120 ksi for ≤1″ and 105 ksi for >1″–1.5″; minimum yield 92 ksi and 81 ksi respectively. F3125 Grade A325 raised all sizes to 120 ksi minimum tensile and 92 ksi minimum yield. Minimum elongation 14%, reduction of area 35%, hardness 253–319 HBN. Marked with three radial lines for Type 1 or “A325” for Type 3. Supplied as assembly with ASTM A563 Grade DH heavy hex nut and ASTM F436 hardened washer. Finishes: plain (uncoated) or hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A153 / F2329. Applications: steel-to-steel structural connections in bridges, high-rise buildings, towers, and industrial structures requiring high-strength bolted joints per RCSC Specification.

ASTM F3125 Grade A325 Heavy Hex Structural Bolts | Quenched & Tempered, 120 ksi
Product Introduction
Heavy hex structural bolts manufactured to ASTM F3125/F3125M, Grade A325 (inch-series). The 2016 consolidation of six former standards placed the legacy A325 specification under Grade A325. Quenched and tempered medium carbon steel. Two types: Type 1 (medium carbon, carbon boron, or medium carbon alloy steel) and Type 3 (weathering steel). Diameters 1/2″ to 1-1/2″ inclusive. Intended for structural steel connections per the Specification for Structural Joints Using High-Strength Bolts (Research Council on Structural Connections). Used in building frames, bridges, and infrastructure.
Material & Mechanical Properties
Minimum tensile strength: 120 ksi (827 MPa) for all sizes. The F3125 standard eliminated the former A325 diameter-based reduction to 105 ksi above 1″.
Minimum yield strength: 92 ksi (634 MPa).
Minimum elongation: 14% in 4D.
Minimum reduction of area: 35%.
Core hardness: 253–319 HBW.
Mechanical values are certified by lot with mill test reports available.
Geometry & Thread
Dimensional conformity to ASME B18.2.6. Diameters and threads: 1/2″-13, 5/8″-11, 3/4″-10, 7/8″-9, 1″-8, 1-1/8″-7, 1-1/4″-7, 1-1/2″-6. Width across flats: 1/2″ = 7/8″; 5/8″ = 1-1/16″; 3/4″ = 1-1/4″; 7/8″ = 1-7/16″; 1″ = 1-5/8″; 1-1/2″ = 2-3/8″. Head height from 0.302″–0.323″ (1/2″) to 0.749″–0.813″ (1-1/4″). Thread length for lengths 6″ and shorter: 1/2″ = 1.00″; 3/4″ = 1.38″; 1″ = 1.75″. Over 6″, thread length increases by 0.25″. UNC Class 2A per ASME B1.1. Bolts ordered with non-standard dimensions per Supplemental Requirement S2 are marked with an “S”.
Surface Finish
Type 1 bolts: plain (uncoated), hot-dip galvanized per ASTM F2329, or mechanically deposited zinc per ASTM B695. Type 3 weathering steel: typically supplied bare to develop a protective oxide patina. Coating selection considers service environment and hydrogen embrittlement control for high-strength fasteners.
Marking & Certification
Bolt head permanently marked with grade symbol “A325” and manufacturer’s identification mark. Type 3 bolts carry an underlined “A325”. Type 1 bolts may optionally be marked with three radial lines 120° apart.
Complete assembly:
Bolt: ASTM F3125 Grade A325
Nut: ASTM A563 Grade DH (Grade C3 for Type 3)
Washer: ASTM F436 hardened
Rotational-capacity tests are performed on each assembly lot per ASTM A325 Section 6.2 prior to shipment. Full traceability via Material Test Reports. EN 10204 Type 3.1 inspection certificates available on request.
Application Suitability
Steel building frames, bridges, and infrastructure projects designed per the RCSC Specification. Suitable for bearing and slip-critical joints when installed to the applicable design code. Type 3 weathering steel is specified for unpainted atmospheric exposure where the protective patina is acceptable.
