Property class 10.9/10.9.3 equivalent, minimum tensile strength 1,040–1,210 MPa. Thread sizes M12–M36 inclusive. Product Introduction
Metric heavy hex structural bolts manufactured to ASTM A490M, now incorporated into ASTM F3125/F3125M. Quenched and tempered alloy steel for structural steel connections. Two types: Type 1 (medium carbon alloy steel) and Type 3 (weathering steel). Diameters M12 to M36 inclusive, lengths 16 mm to 300 mm. Minimum tensile strength 1040 MPa, minimum yield strength 940 MPa. Black oxide finish standard.
Material & Mechanical Properties
Tensile strength 1040–1210 MPa, yield strength 940 MPa minimum, elongation 14% minimum in 4D, reduction of area 40% minimum. Hardness: 33–39 HRC for diameters M12–M24 (lengths shorter than 2D) and M25–M36 (lengths shorter than 3D); longer bolts require maximum 39 HRC only. Heat treatment: oil quenched from austenitizing temperature, tempered at minimum 427 °C (800 °F). Type 1: medium carbon alloy steel. Type 3: weathering steel with atmospheric corrosion resistance. Type 2 withdrawn in 2002.
Geometry & Thread
Dimensional conformity to ASME B18.2.6M. Diameters: M12, M16, M20, M22, M24, M27, M30, M36. Metric coarse pitch threads. Head dimensions per ASME B18.2.6M tables. For hot-dip galvanized bolts, threads are tapped oversize before coating; galvanized nuts require contrasting-colour lubricant for visual inspection.
Surface Finish
Standard: black oxide, non-reflective matte surface with mild corrosion resistance for indoor and dry environments. Additional finishes: zinc plating (blue-white, yellow, colour zinc), hot-dip galvanizing, Dacromet, Geomet, mechanical zinc plating, and PTFE (Teflon) coating. Finish selection considers service environment and hydrogen embrittlement control for high-strength alloy steel.
Marking & Certification
Bolt head permanently marked with grade symbol "A490M" (or "A490" for inch series), manufacturer's identification mark, and type designation. Type 3 bolts carry an underlined "A490M" marking, with optional additional atmospheric corrosion resistance marks. All markings remain visible after coating.
