AS/NZS 1110 Carbon Steel Hexagon Head Bolts | ISO Metric Coarse
Product Introduction
Carbon steel hexagon head bolts manufactured to AS/NZS 1110, currently issued as AS 1110.1:2015 and based on ISO 4014:2011. The standard covers ISO metric precision hexagon bolts with coarse pitch thread. Sizes M1.6 to M64, thread tolerance class 6g. Partially threaded bolts are covered by AS 1110.1; fully threaded screws are covered by AS 1110.2 (equivalent to ISO 4017). The bolts are dimensionally interchangeable with ISO and European equivalents. Used in Australian and New Zealand structural steelwork, machinery assemblies, and general engineering.
Material & Mechanical Properties
Carbon steel for property classes 4.6 and 5.8; quenched and tempered alloy steel for classes 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9. Property class 9.8 is also available. Values per ISO 898-1:
Class 4.6: minimum tensile strength 400 MPa; minimum yield strength 240 MPa.
Class 8.8: minimum tensile strength 800 MPa for M5–M16; 830 MPa for M17–M36; stress under proof load 580 MPa.
Class 10.9: minimum tensile strength 1040 MPa; minimum yield strength 940 MPa.
Minimum ultimate tensile loads for class 8.8: M12 = 67.4 kN; M16 = 125 kN; M20 = 203 kN; M24 = 293 kN. Mechanical properties are certified by lot.
Geometry & Thread
Product grade A applies to threads M1.6 to M24 with nominal lengths ≤ 10d or 150 mm, whichever is shorter. Grade B applies to threads above M24 or longer lengths. Width across flats: M8 = 13.0 mm, M10 = 16.0 mm, M12 = 18.0 mm, M16 = 24.0 mm, M20 = 30.0 mm, M24 = 36.0 mm. Head height: M16 = 10.0 mm; M24 = 15.0 mm. Threads conform to ISO metric coarse pitch per ISO 261.
Surface Finish
Electroplated zinc with clear or yellow passivation is standard for indoor and general-purpose applications. Hot-dip galvanizing is applied to AS/NZS 1214 for outdoor and corrosive environments; threads are tapped oversize before coating to maintain assembly fit with standard nuts. Other finishes are available on request.
Marking & Certification
Each bolt head is permanently marked with the property class and the manufacturer’s or supplier’s identification mark. Distributor or importer marks may also be applied in line with revised marking requirements aligned to ISO. Test certification is supplied as standard and can be provided on request. Mating hexagon nuts to AS/NZS 1112 (style 1) of matching property class are recommended.
Application Suitability
Structural steelwork, machinery assemblies, and general engineering in Australia and New Zealand where ISO metric coarse thread fasteners are specified. The partially threaded design allows the unthreaded shank to intersect shear planes where joint design requires it. For fully threaded applications, AS 1110.2 (ISO 4017) equivalents are specified.
