Ceramic Ferrules
Each stud is supplied with a cordierite ceramic ferrule. During the drawn‑arc welding cycle, the ferrule surrounds the molten pool, shielding it from atmospheric contamination and shaping the fillet weld. Cordierite withstands the extreme thermal shock and high temperature of the welding process without melting or cracking. Ferrules are removed after the weld solidifies.
Installation & Weld Verification
Welding is performed with a drawn‑arc stud gun, not a resistance spot welder. After the metal deck is placed over the supporting structural steel, the gun lifts the stud, initiates an electric arc that melts the stud tip and a localized area of the beam flange, then plunges the stud into the molten pool — burning through the deck without the need for pre‑drilled holes.
Post‑weld integrity is verified by a visual check of the full‑circle flash and fillet dimensions, followed by a mechanical bend test. An iron mallet strikes the side of the welded stud, bending it to the angle specified by the applicable standard. A stud that remains attached without fracture at the weld joint confirms a sound connection. A stud that breaks off at the beam interface under this shear‑bending force indicates a failed weld and must be replaced.
Application Suitability
Composite floor and roof decks in steel‑framed buildings, bridge decks, industrial mezzanines, wind turbine foundations, and other structures where the structural engineer specifies a shear connection to resist longitudinal shear between the concrete slab and steel beam.
