Aws D1.1 Shear Stud

Steel Structure Wedge Anchor

Steel Structure Wedge Anchor are designed to tie the concrete slab with the steel beams and steel deck. This weld studs shear connectors can resist shear forces and increase shear loading capacity in steel buildings. Steel Structure Wedge Anchor Mainly applied for through steel deck stud welding in composite construction project. All Shear Studs are supplied with ceramic ferrules (ceramic ring). The Ceramic ferrules are made of cordierite and able to withstand heat shock as well as high temperatures without melting or breaking

Product Details

Product Introduction
Headed shear connector studs manufactured to ISO 13918 and AWS D1.1/D1.1M for through‑deck stud welding in composite steel‑concrete structures. These cylindrical weld fasteners — occasionally misidentified as wedge anchors — are designed to tie a cast‑in‑place concrete slab to a steel beam or profiled steel deck. The shear studs transfer longitudinal shear forces at the steel‑concrete interface, raising the composite section’s load‑carrying capacity and stiffness.

Material & Mechanical Properties
Fabricated from weldable low‑carbon steel with controlled deoxidation to stabilize the drawn arc. After stud welding, the fusion zone develops full‑penetration bond strength meeting the tensile and bend requirements of the applicable structural welding code. The resulting connection provides shear capacity exceeding the shank cross‑section, ensuring ductile behaviour rather than brittle weld fracture.

Dimensions & Identification

  • Nominal diameter range: Ф10 mm – Ф25 mm

  • Length before welding: 40 mm – 300 mm

  • Head geometry: cheese head for arc stud welding per ISO 13918

  • Identification: each stud head bears the manufacturer’s stamped glyph for traceability

Ceramic Ferrules
Every stud is supplied complete with a cordierite ceramic ferrule. The ring‑shaped ferrule surrounds the weld pool during the arc cycle, shields the molten metal from atmospheric contamination, and shapes the fillet. Cordierite’s thermal shock resistance allows the ferrule to withstand the rapid temperature rise of drawn‑arc stud welding without melting, spalling, or breaking.

Installation & Weld Verification
After the metal deck is placed over the steel beam, the stud is welded using a drawn‑arc stud gun. The gun lifts the stud, ignites an electric arc that melts the stud tip and a localized area of the beam flange, then forces the stud into the molten pool — penetrating the deck without requiring pre‑drilled holes.
Post‑weld quality control includes visual inspection of the 360° fillet and a mechanical bend test: striking the side of the welded stud with an iron mallet bends the stud to a specified angle without detachment or fracture at the weld interface. A stud that snaps off under this test reveals an unsound weld and must be replaced.

Application Suitability
Composite floor decks in multistorey steel‑framed buildings, bridge decks, industrial platforms, wind turbine foundation plinths, petroleum pipeline support structures, and other steel‑concrete hybrid projects where a code‑specified shear connection is required to achieve full composite action. The studs are also deployed in high‑shear zones of road and railway bridge superstructures.
